Recipient Org: Description New Town Together is a community group in Newtownhamilton, set up in 2019 to address community issues and actively engage with the people in our area to enhance our town through working together and running a number of events, workshops and a men's shed. Our main aim is to provide a social outlet for the community of Newtownhamilton focusing especially on engaging older people. New Town Together was formed by a group of people at a public meeting in the area to work for the betterment of the people of Newtownhamilton. Working together has helped us form a strong committee with a common goal, led by people with a passion to effect change in our area. Our community group leaders are strong with years of community development experience, we are mostly older people that need to see Newtownhamilton move forward and offer our residents an innovative programme of appropriate activities. As a group we have a range of skills that we aim to share and develop. We have recently held a programme of issue led activities to allow people to turn up and try out workshops and listen to speakers from local community and voluntary organisations, sharing information and helping people access much needed services. At these sessions there was up to 39 people in attendance and we used this as a valuable opportunity to conduct a series of needs assessments and questionnaires. These allowed people to air their thoughts on a new group and share comments, insights and suggestions for our group to use to build a programme that is inclusive, engaging, new and fresh for the people of Newtownhamilton. Along with a walking group and a community Christmas event our participants were focused on a men's shed. Since then we have put our energies into securing premises and giving older men in Newtownhamilton the chance to drop-in, share skills, have a chat and engage in new activities driven and shaped by what they want. We have produced planters for our village and run several village clean up days. Our committee is very active and aim to see progress as soon as possible but we are also open change which has become important as our group has many ideas that we would like to see happen if only to try them out. We have had a lot of support from the wider community, venue hire in kind, refreshments when we have been doing a street clean up and buying tickets for our raffles etc. This shows a positive level of support and a willingness to play a part in making Newtownhamilton a better place to live, grow up and grow old.
