Recipient Org: Description Emerge Advocacy (EA) exists to provide ongoing emotional support and advocacy to young people aged 14 - 21 who attend the Royal Surrey County Hospital (RSCH) because of self-harm or attempted suicide. The young person can contact EA from hospital and a specially trained Volunteer Youth Worker (VYW) will be sent to go and listen to the young person and to be a friendly and reassuring presence. The VYW will help the young person to articulate their situation, feelings and wishes to medics, and be present during appointments or assessments if desired by the young person. The VYW will help the young person to understand what medical professionals are communicating, help the young person set positive short term goals, help them think through any barriers they perceive to engaging with ongoing treatment, signpost the young person to community groups, encourage the young person in the pursuit of positive activities, and provide follow-up within a week of discharge from hospital. The involvement with a young person may last up to 6 weeks. EA is staffed by people from local Churches and exists for the support of young people of all faiths or none. EA started in February 2016. It has a Management Committee of 5 people, 4 volunteers, and 1 part-time member of staff.
