Recipient Org: Description Home-Start originally began in Leicester in 1973 with the aim of providing free confidential and non-judgmental support to families with young children. There are now over 300 Home-Start schemes across the UK, including 8 within Surrey. Home-Start UK (HS-UK) provides guidelines and training for staff, trustees and volunteers of local schemes, as well as setting standards. HS-UK does not provide funds for Home-Start Guildford (HSG). HSG is an independent registered charity, which has been running since 1996, supporting families within the borough who are disadvantaged and who have at least one child aged 5 or under. Recently the Charity has also begun to branch out into Mole Valley. HSG was established in 1996 and was registered as a CIO in 2013. The charity reaches out to struggling families at risk of social exclusion who may not engage with other services. Home-Start places trained volunteers alongside parents, visiting them in their home once a week. Volunteers provide practical and emotional support and support is tailored to the individual needs of each family. Support is provided for as long as the family need it, which is on average one year. Volunteers are local parents who are selected, trained and supervised by HSG. In 2015-2016, HSG supported 110 families, with home-visiting volunteers. HSG has a Management Committee of 6, 3 part-time staff, and 3 full-time staff. HSG is supported by 74 volunteers.
