Recipient Org: Description Home-Start originally began in Leicester in 1973 with the aim being to provide free confidential and non-judgemental support to families with young children. There are now over 300 Home-Start schemes across the UK, including 9 within Surrey. Home-Start UK provides guidelines and training for staff, trustees and volunteers of local schemes, as well as setting standards. Home-Start Farnham and Haslemere (operating as Home-Start in Waverley) is an independent registered charity, which has been running since 1998, supporting families within the borough who are disadvantaged and who have at least one child aged 5 or under. The charity's aims are to prevent family crisis and/or breakdown by safeguarding, protecting and preserving the good health, both mental and physical, of children and their parents and to prevent cruelty and maltreatment of children. _x000D_ _x000D_ Since established Home-start Waverly have helped more than 800 families and 1,800 children. The emphasis is to increase parents' self-esteem and confidence in their parenting abilities. The scheme recruits, trains and supervises volunteers who visit families in their homes regularly to offer practical and emotional support, until the family feels able to cope alone. The charity has a team of over 50 volunteers, is managed by a board of 7 Trustees and employs 6 part-time members of staff to co-ordinate and supervise home-visiting volunteers.
