Recipient Org: Description The principal activity of Freewheelers Theatre Company is giving people with and without disabilities the chance to produce and participate in innovative drama, dance and film. Freewheelers gives people with any disability the support to produce and participate in high-quality original performance arts, thus challenging barriers, conventions and perceptions. During weekly Drama, Dance and Music workshops Freewheelers work with artists to explore, create and rehearse performances. Media workshops tackle film-making and production, including editing, camera work and sound. Freewheeler's members are mainly from across Surrey and Freewheelers aims to be accessible to people on low incomes. Two days a week are based at a Youth Centre in North Leatherhead (an area of social deprivation) and workshops take place in Ashtead and Cobham. The team also provides outreach workshops in mainstream schools and colleges about understanding disability, with many of the workshops being mentored by disabled Freewheelers members. Freewheelers gives at least six local performances a year, and in addition Freewheelers tours a major production across the South East about every 18 months. The youngest Youth Theatre members are 14 and there is no upper age limit. Working with Freewheelers leads to work opportunities for some, and for others it provides an artistic outlet, builds confidence and gives good company._x000D_ A team of 11 free-lance and part-time artists, with the support of a Carer/Communicator, provide the weekly workshops and training opportunities. The organisation is managed by a volunteer General Manager, with the support of a part-time bookkeeper/Administrator and a part-time Communications and Marketing Manager. Freewheelers has a Management Committee of 10 people and is supported by 45 volunteers. Freewheelers was established in 1989 within Queen Elizabeth's Foundation (QEF) for Disabled People. Freewheelers Theatre Company became an independent organisation in 2006 and is now a charity and a company limited by guarantee.
