Recipient Org: Description | Supporting the health and well-being needs of people over 60 years of age:_x000D_ Our prime focus is with all those aged over 60 who live alone in our local community of Farnham. We offer friendship through our various activities, develop skills such as computer skills through 1:1 sessions and aim to give everyone a sense of self-worth and purpose. We liaise with local organisations to offer training and development eg First Aid for Carers fully funded February 2015 by the Red Cross._x000D_ Isolation and loneliness so often leads to depression and mental health issues. Our work seeks to break this cycle, so preventing physical and mental health issues from becoming established as evidenced by the Campaign to End Loneliness reports http://www.campaigntoendloneliness.org/loneliness-research/ _x000D_ Promoting independence:_x000D_ We seek to support our clients lead as independent lives as possible whether in their own homes or in warden assisted accommodation. Our activities and events support everyone to get out and about and our 1: 1 Befrienders will help out with shopping and other tasks. We provide transport for all our events and also wheelchair assistants are on hand to support anyone with limited mobility. We use venues that are accessible for all and within short distances from the local bus routes. Across our programme of activities we ensure wherever possible venues, times, the number of volunteers available and offers of transport enable those with additional needs to join in, e.g with sensory needs, physical or learning disabilities and those living with dementia and their carers. Small charges or no charge for activities help to increase their accessibility._x000D_ Leisure and Lives:_x000D_ We have a wide range of social activities that run regularly, some weekly, that enable our clients meet others. This is often accompanied by a nutritious meal or warm drink. Our monthly lunches held in two locations in the town offer a healthy 2 course roast meal at nominal cost prepared on the premises with fresh ingredients. At Easter and Christmas there are special celebration events with a small gift for our clients to take home. Music is a fundamental part of our activities and vitally important when working alongside those suffering from dementia eg Olde Time Music Hall which has been very well received._x000D_ During the summer months outings are planned using local transport, minibuses or a coach company. We have a team of voluntary drivers who provide transport to all our events and activities, so enabling those with impeded mobility access to our services._x000D_ There is an established team of specialist volunteers who offer a one to one befriending service and visit their clients each week for a friendly chat and will offer support with shopping or attending appointments. We receive referrals for this service from Social Services, other voluntary services and health professionals._x000D_ Our Pie and Pint Club targets men who live alone, an increasing cause for concern within all communities as outlined in a report published 13th October 2014 by the International Longevity Centre UK. Men living alone are statistically less likely than women to network socially which leads to isolation, loneliness and ill health. Feedback from this group is always positive and has resulted in friendship beyond just the weekly lunchtime get together._x000D_ Farnham Assist is a local charity which serves the local residents enabling us to respond quickly to local issues as they arise. We work closely with other services in the town and their managers such as the Brightwells Gostrey Day Centre, GP surgeries, warden assisted residences and residential care homes to gain their feedback and insight into our work. We seek to work in partnership with our clients and continually seek their feedback and respond to their suggestions to improve further our services. We consult closely with our volunteers through monthly co-ordinator meetings and also an annual consultation with all our volunteers which shapes future plans and ways of working._x000D_ Our office offers a drop-in service Monday to Thursday in a central location with easy access and staff are on hand to respond to clients' requests either in person or on the telephone. Focus weeks offer free legal advice, including a Wills Week using a local solicitor. The Citizens Advice Bureau offers home visits with an adviser via our office who is sponsored through our supporters._x000D_ This support enables our clients feel more confident and able to manage their own affairs, so improving mental health and well-being and alleviating stress._x000D_ We seek to support the fulfilment of the Joint Health and Well-Being Strategy for Surrey with particular reference to improving older adults' health and well-being with a priority outcome that older adults will stay healthier and independent for longer. The Census data from 2011 clearly shows an increase in the older population with the highest incidence of dementia in Surrey in this locality. In Farnham the number of older persons aged 65 and above is close to the number of those under 18. These statistics demonstrate the real need for a charity such as ours. The majority of older persons involved with Farnham Assist either as clients or volunteers are still living independently at own home and so we aim to play a specific part in the community to help postpone the time when they will need further assistance from statutory services. We do work in partnership with other organisations in the town such as Age UK, Citizens Advice Bureau, Care Farnham, Right at Home and the Williams Club for the visually impaired, so that we can signpost clients to one anothers' services eg help with gardening or lifts to the hospital. We rely totally on charitable giving and can only sustain our services with additional grant funding. |
