Recipient Org: Description Change of Scene (COS) is a registered charity and a limited company, established in July 2008 and based in Farnham on a 16 acre small holding. The charity was created to make available a place of tranquillity and positive experiences for children who feel they would benefit from a change of scene. The charity works with a small number of children aged 6-18 years, on a one-to-one basis, with intensive support calculated to make a ‘life-changing difference for a few rather than a marginal difference for many.’ At Change of Scene the children experience nature. They are able to care for a wide range of animals and the environment, plant flowers, grow and cook seasonal fruit and vegetables, make jams and chutneys, extract and bottle honey, gather wood, build dens, repair animal houses, fences and hives, maintain a bog garden, discover pond life, identify birds and their song, identify wild animal tracks, participate in night watches for nocturnal creatures, make camp fires, picnic and play non-electronic games such as board games, puzzles, quoits, diablo, and trampoline. The children accessing COS activities are predominantly from Surrey and come from educationally, economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds. All the children referred to COS display social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties causing them to be excluded or expelled from school. All children accessing the charity have been identified as in urgent need of a life changing experience to help them fulfil their potential and enable them to return to sustainable education. To date, COS has assisted 86 disadvantaged children to return to mainstream education and more promising futures. Schools, Pupil Referral Units, Access to Education, and others make referrals when their own provision is unable to fulfil their pupils’ requirements. COS liaise closely with the statutory authorities and parent/carers to maximise beneficial outcomes. In June 2016 COS became an accredited centre for the AQA Unit Award scheme. COS employs 5 part-time staff members and is supported by 10 volunteers. 9 Trustees oversee the charity’s operation.
