Recipient Org: Description Emerge Advocacy (EA) is a recently registered CIO, which exists to promote and protect good health in particular for those aged between 14 and 21, suffering from mental illness or emotional distress. This is achieved through encouraging engagement with care and treatment; provision of support, advocacy, education and preventative work; advancing education in all areas relating to mental illness in young people; and the provision of follow up support and activities which promote recovery. A young person can contact EA from hospital and a specially trained Volunteer Youth Worker (VYW) will be sent to reassure and listen to the young person. The VYW will help the young person to articulate their situation, feelings and wishes to medics; be present during appointments or assessments if desired by the young person; help the young person to understand what medical professionals are communicating; help the young person set positive goals; signpost to community groups and positive activities, and provide follow-up within a week of discharge from hospital. The involvement with a young person may last up to 6 weeks. EA is supported by people from local Churches and exists to support young people of all faiths or none. EA is manages by 6 Trustees, has 1 part-time member of staff, and is supported by 10 volunteers.
