Recipient Org: Description | CARA (Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse) is a registered charity working with victims and survivors of sexual violence and child sexual abuse, providing independent, specialist support and promoting and representing their rights and needs. CARA works with adults of all genders, young people (aged 13-17) and children aged 12 and under from across mid and north Essex. We provide our services from our head office in Colchester and from outreach premises in Braintree, Chelmsford, Clacton-on-Sea, Great Dunmow and Harwich. Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the majority of our services have been delivered remotely, although we have continued to offer face-to-face support to young, isolated or vulnerable victims who, for safety or privacy reasons, are unable to access our support remotely. CARA is a women-led organisation and we work from a feminist perspective. We actively seek to ensure equality of women as a service provider and as an employer. Our core values of feminism, respect, empowerment and equality underpin everything we do. CARA provides: • An Independent Sexual Violence Adviser (ISVA) service, supporting victims who report to the police through each stage of the criminal justice process. Our ISVAs also provide informed choice meetings for victims who are considering reporting the sexual abuse they have experienced to the police. • One-to-one specialist counselling and therapeutic support for adults and young people. • Specialist play therapy for children aged 12 and under, and support for their families. • An advocacy service. • A women-only social group. • Awareness-raising activities, including workshops in schools, training and presentations for professionals and organisations. • Activities to help service-users develop their “voice” to increase understanding of sexual violence and child sexual abuse and influence policy and practice, including facilitating service-user involvement in research, conferences and meetings. |
