Recipient Org: Description | Teen Talk (Harwich) provides support and activities for young people aged 11-25 years in Tendring, Essex. Our project adapts to the changing needs of young people and we are currently addressing emerging mental health issues, low self-esteem, confidence and the pressures of social media, all of which play a critical role in preventing a young person from reaching their full potential. Core activity is based around our confidential, one-to-one support service providing early intervention five days per week from our centre in Harwich and three afternoons per week on an outreach basis in Clacton. This service allows young people to self-refer and access Support Workers who provide a listening ear for the young person to offload their worries at a time when they often do not understand their feelings and are struggling to cope. We provide simple strategies that enables a young person to build their resilience and overcome the difficulties they face. Our experience shows that an informal but safe and confidential support service is needed in an area of little youth provision and high levels of disadvantage to promote good health and mental wellbeing and prevent progression to higher tiers of need. Support is person centred, giving the young person the choice over what to discuss, the strategies to try and the length of time they wish to engage. For some, a one off session is all they need, for others it may be weekly sessions over a couple of months. We are also able to work with families, offering mediation to strengthen relationships. As well as one-to-one support Teen Talk offers weekly group activities such as cookery workshops, wildlife activities, volunteering and community programmes offering the opportunity to further develop confidence, self-esteem and overall wellbeing. In addition, group activities encourage the development of personal skills such as communication, team building and time management, and practical skills such as project planning, marketing and event organisation, to help young people develop their aspirations, reach their full potential and increase social inclusion in an area where social activities are limited. Overall, through a combination of support services and complimentary group activities, Teen Talk aims to provide young people and their families, who face multiple deprivation, with the tools and strategies they need to tackle the difficulties they face at their immediate time of need and at their earliest opportunity. |
