Recipient Org: Description Just Ride Southend (JRS) became a Charity (1179453) in August 2018 having been established as a Constituted Voluntary Organisation in early 2014 with the objective of offering people of all ages and abilities the chance to enjoy cycling in a safe and supported environment. A partnership was established comprising of enthusiastic volunteers, Cycle Southend, Project 49 (a local day service for adults with learning disabilities), Southend Public Health and Southend Borough Council officers responsible for a) Sport/Leisure and b) Disabled Children’s services. Currently three sessions are offered a week – with one session being supported by adults with learning disabilities from Project 49 who are registered as volunteers. On average, JR has between 50-150 riders a session (depending on the weather) – with a similar number of carers/parents either joining in or relaxing with a (free!) coffee/tea. On Saturdays and during school holidays the numbers are higher and we extend our session by an hour to help accommodate extra demand. This means that on average over 100 disabled people a week are enjoying cycling. During the weekday sessions the cyclists are either individual riders attending alone or with their carers or they come as a small group from local day services, care homes, supported housing and local special schools regularly have also brought groups of children. We are also seeing increasing amount of home schooling families and those recovering from operations and joint replacement to aid recovery, along with those who are retired and looking for safe and social places to exercise and chat. During Saturdays and the school holidays there are many families who attend. One of the advantages for families is that the cost is very low as carer(s) are free. During the school holidays local charities supporting disabled children have used the scheme as part of their program of activities. Just Ride’s ambition is to develop into a center where anybody, regardless of age or ability, can enjoy the freedom and achievement that cycling can offer. In every way it seeks to support the vision of the Southend Health and Well-being Strategy; • To ensure our children have the best start in life • To encourage and support local people to make healthier choices • To endeavor to reduce the health gap between the most/least wealthy • For people to have control over their lives as much as possible • To improve health and mental well-being being able to support those with long term conditions. JRS increases awareness and confidence offering opportunities for riders to practice their skills in a safe environment being ‘off-road’ before wanting to take on something more challenging. For the past 3 years JRS has employed British Cycling Coaches (who includes a Special Needs Teacher) to teach people of all ages and abilities to ride. And finally not only is cycling good for the individual and family inclusion it is good for the environment. As It offers a cheap and sustainable way to access employment, health, education and leisure facilities.
