Recipient Org: Description Open Road is a leading provider of drug and alcohol services in the East of England with Treatment Centres and Welfare Services in operation across Essex. Approaching our 30th year, the fundamental aims, objectives and principles that characterise us have remained constant. The people who use our services are at the heart of everything we do, and we are helping more people than ever before. Our aim is to empower a diverse range of individuals, families and communities to lead healthy and more meaningful lives, free from addiction, offending behaviour and disadvantage, to ensure healthier, happier lifestyles. Our objectives are to support more people; increase the number of users of our services in developing and shaping future projects; be the voice of vulnerable people in our communities; recruit and train high quality staff and volunteers; demonstrate value for money by managing our resources well; for strong and productive partnerships; and maximise new communication technology opportunities to help deliver our services. Our services include providing drug and alcohol treatment on behalf of authorities, agencies, NHS clinical commissioning groups, other charities, community safety partnerships, the police and crime reduction agencies. We provide high quality, effective and evidence-based treatment in the community for those struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol. We provide recovery support which is generally learned from other people who have gone down the same road who are in a good position to ‘mentor’ or model our methods and principles of recovery. Our activities build on maintaining a client’s progress and wellbeing. Services include a needle and syringe programme for injecting drug users including steroid users, working alongside 41 pharmacies across Essex, we give advice on harm minimisation and health related issues. Our centres are at the heart of our drop-in services, no appointment is necessary so that anyone affected by drugs and alcohol including friends and family, can drop in for advice and support. The centres also offer a central point for diversionary activities such as allotments, gyms, art classes and for outreach workers in projects such as Essex Street Drinkers which has been set up to help the homeless within Essex. Open Road supports women with complex needs and works in partnership with Next Chapter (formerly Colchester & Tendring Women’s Refuge) to run a 9 bed ‘Recovery’ Refuge for women fleeing domestic abuse that have drug and alcohol addictions. These women are some of the most vulnerable in our society and are often turned away from standard refuges due to the risk they pose to children who may also being staying in traditional refuge accommodation. Open Road provides a Substance Misuse Specialist to work within the refuge, in collaboration with Essex STaRS and other partner agencies, to assist these women on their road to recovery. Once the women have made significant progress, Next Chapter look to move them on to standard refuge accommodation and eventually step-down accommodation. This is a new and exciting project, and the only one of its kind in Essex. In fact, there is only 1 other refuge in the country that offers the same support and treatment as our ‘Recovery’ Refuge. Essex Women's Support Service is available to women being released from prison and those who are on community orders (Probation). Referrals can be received directly from the Community Rehabilitation Company (CRC) and National Probation Service (NPS). Essex Women's Support Service operates regular women-only drop-in and reporting sessions in locations across the county. We offer one-to-one mentoring to support women in achieving their goals. We also run a mandatory 8 week programme which covers a range of issues such as relationships, confidence and self-esteem, health and empowerment. Our mentors also offer practical advice and support to women on a range of topics including budgeting, debt, benefits, and housing, access to training & employment and mental health. We can also assist with filling in forms or attending appointments. Often, and most importantly of all, our mentors provide a non-judgmental, listening ear and offer emotional support to women who may be socially isolated, lacking in confidence and in need of someone to talk to with access to Women Only Workshops (WOW) and monthly care packages to support health, hygiene and wellbeing. Open Road also provides Criminal Justice Services which are aimed at safeguarding communities and reducing offending within the community. These services work mainly with offenders, and sometimes their families, to support and assist them in addressing the issues which cause, or may cause them to offend. Volunteer workers are a crucial element of our Criminal Justice work – they are trained to provide specialist support to each service. Open Road SOS Buses are specially adapted vehicles located in Colchester High Street and Chelmsford City Centre at weekends to provide a safe haven and medical support to people who need it. Both of our specially adapted buses are staffed primarily by trained volunteers. As well as offering a safe haven for late-night visitors, our volunteers help diffuse trouble alongside qualified medics that provide medical support to people who need it. This helps reduce the negative impact of the night time economy on the businesses and residents of Colchester and Chelmsford. The SOS teams coordinate with other support services – street pastors, doormen at pubs & clubs, the Police, Ambulance Service and A&E. This means that incidents can be quickly coordinated, assessed and dealt with. Open Road partners with Remote Medic UK who provide on-board healthcare professionals, including paramedic practitioners and doctors; they respond to medical emergencies and can treat minor injuries and illness. This reduces ambulance calls and A&E admissions. In 2017/18, Open Road helped over 11000 people with a wide range of problems including 3,262 in structured drug and alcohol treatment and over 500 offenders.
