Recipient Org: Description City of Chelmsford Mencap is a local independent charity supporting people with a learning disability across mid-Essex. It provides lifelong learning, social clubs and specialist services and offers information, advice and support to service users, families and carers. The Charity's lifelong learning service, The Outreach Academy, operates five days a week, fifty weeks a year. It offers a wide range of courses that help to develop work, life and social skills. These include functional skills, cooking and dance. All courses are led by experienced tutors and specialist staff support students, including providing personal and therapeutic care. Students have a range of learning disabilities, including a wide range of severity from mild to severe, and associated sensory, physical and communication needs. A high number also have chronic health conditions, including arthritis, diabetes and epilepsy. The aims of the Charity, and especially The Outreach Academy, are to help students reach their potential, support them to access the community and to demonstrate that people with a learning disability are not just passive receivers of care but able, with the right support, to make valuable contributions to their local community.
