Recipient Org: Description Home-Start is a voluntary organisation which is committed the promoting the welfare of families with at least one child under five years of age. Volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to families under stress, in their own home, helping to prevent family crisis and breakdown. Volunteers are trained by the scheme manager and co-ordinators on a ten week preparation course so they are aware of the many situations they may incur when visiting families. These range from isolation, postnatal depression, poor mental health, illness and sometimes bereavement, multiple births and domestic violence. Volunteers are also trained in safeguarding - this training is regularly updated. Volunteers are supported by the scheme co-ordinators who offer face to face support and telephone support every six weeks. We also run 3 family groups, in each of the main towns, Witham, Braintree and Halstead and these are closed groups, to support families who are isolated, vulnerable and experiencing difficulties. These groups encourage parents and children to boost their self confidence, self esteem and self worth. These are run by experienced staff and volunteers who have all been DBS checked; we have a play leader to organise play with the children and encourage their full potential and there are staff and volunteers to support the mums and listen to any concerns they may have. Mums often start their own friendships eventually at the groups and this gives them confidence to move on and realise they are not on their own. We usually have parties for the children at Christmas where every child receives a gift and we try and organise trips out in the summer months (funding permitting) to the zoo, picnics and soft play.
