| Recipient Org: Description | Who we are: North Avenue Youth Centre (NAYC) is an independent charity providing young people with activities and a safe, affordable place to go. Our aim is to develop the young people's physical, mental and spiritual capacities so that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society, and their conditions of life may improve. What we do: Our centre has a purpose-built sports hall where we run a range of sports activities. We enjoy partnership working and regularly link up with other like-minded organisations at times to provide activities. We currently run four sessions a week, three for secondary aged children, and one for junior aged children. Our work with young people is rooted in positive meaningful relationships with both adults and other young people. We aim to provide a warm safe space where young people are encouraged to explore their values and beliefs in order to learn about themselves and others. We promote learning through experience, to develop transferable skills, for example managing conflict, boundaries and respect in sports to support their relationships outside of the youth centre. We plan our sessions and activities around current topical issues, as well as considering the needs of the young people we work with. For example, we have done work around personal wellbeing, online bullying and trolling, risky behaviour, confidence and self-esteem and conflict. We aim to empower young people, supporting them to identify how they can access power in positive ways, for example contributing to making meaningful decisions and recognising successes as well as engaging in evaluation and personal reflection as part of our young leader programs. We use a wide variety of activities in delivering informal education, this may be cooking, crafts, sports, residentials such as adventure training and camping as well as planning community activities such as fundraising or days out. Where we operate: NAYC is independent having just one centre in Chelmsford, Essex. The Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2019 show that whilst Chelmsford as a whole city has rates which are significantly higher than the Essex average, the Marconi ward, where NAYC is located, falls in the 20% most deprived areas of England. Our children generally come from families on low incomes. Most of our families cannot afford extra-curricular activities. We charge a nominal £1 for our sessions and will accept people for free if they cannot afford that. It is important for our families to have local, affordable and accessible provision for their children. Our purpose: NAYC was started in 2000 by local youth charities and the United Reformed Church as a response to anti-social behaviour and vandalism in the area. We have built up a good reputation locally with Chelmsford City Council and residents and have a strong network of community links. The area surrounding the youth centre is seen by the city as a whole as being a troublesome and undesirable area. Our desire is to provide more than activities to keep young people out of trouble. We want to empower the young people to reach their potential in life and provide them with resources and support to combat the educational, social and economic disadvantages they are facing, so that they have every chance to succeed in life. Many of our young people are struggling with school and have low aspirations and issues around behaviour. As well as the more common issues around self-esteem, bullying, anger management, family breakdowns, some of our young people have very close links to gangs – either directly, or through close family and friends. As such they are very vulnerable to being drawn into exploitation, gangs and criminal activities. |
