Recipient Org: Description The Royal Air Force Air Cadets (aka RAFAC) is a national youth organisation which is sponsored by the Royal Air Force. Most Towns across the UK have their own Squadron and Maldon’s Air Cadets have been in the town since 1969. Maldon Air Cadets aims to provide many of the core activities on offer throughout the RAFAC which include flying, gliding, shooting, sports, team building exercises, military skills training, adventure training, both UK and overseas camps to RAF stations across the globe, community service such as parades, Duke of Edinburgh award, first aid training and BTEC qualifications in Aviation Studies as well as Leadership. Maldon Air Cadets is part sponsored by the RAF who help fund our building and pay for some of the core activities such as flying, gliding, RAF uniform and camps on RAF stations. Everything else associated is ‘self-funded’. Cadet’s parents pay a subscription each month which covers items such as insurance, utilities and other running costs. We raise the rest of our funds through fundraising activities such as Quiz nights, bag packing in local shops and helping with car parking at community events in return for a small donation. We have also applied for grants. Maldon Air Cadets is open to all young people in the local community. Cadets are aged between twelve and twenty. We help young people benefit from different experiences they wouldn’t get at school or in other groups. We hope to help support cadets move into adult life giving them experience to assist them going into further education, apprenticeships or employment. Cadets are particularly attracted by the activity package on offer in the cadets, including opportunities not generally provided to others. They also enjoy belonging to the cadet family and the opportunities that affords them in meeting with cadets from other parts of Essex and in some instances from across the country. The cadets are given an opportunity to gain qualifications whilst in cadets and cadets recognise that membership of the Air cadets give benefits for their future career development, for example CV enhancement, personal development and acquiring skills for their future studying and career. For some cadets membership of Air Cadets has been a positive and stable experience in otherwise difficult personal circumstances. Surveys carried out show that cadets tend to have high levels of respect for authority and others and high levels of self esteem. They are likely to be committed citizens and have heightened aspirations. Air Cadets also provides positive benefits for the adult volunteers involved. Our current uniformed staff are aged from 23 and are motivated by a desire to help young people. They come from a varied background, including being cadets themselves or ex service personnel. Volunteers, particularly the uniformed staff, also aware of improvements in their own skill sets – particularly with regard to leadership and enhanced self-confidence. They also feel proud to be part of the cadet family and have pride in the Squadron and the achievements of the young people that belong to it.
