Recipient Org: Description Deafblindness is most commonly associated with ageing, but can result at any age from congenital or other medical conditions such as Usher's syndrome, diabetes and stroke, or as a result of injury. Robbed of the ability to carry out the most basic of everyday tasks (such as communicating with friends and family, finding information, making a meal) people living with deafblindness can find themselves in unimaginable social, emotional and physical isolation. Deafblind UK (DBUK) is a membership organisation of, and governed by, people who have deafblindness. It is our vision that people living with deafblindness have the same rights, access and opportunities as others. We deliver quality services that give people with the condition autonomy and control over their lives.Through our work, we support equality , independence and choice. We do this by: - Ensuring that people with dual sensory loss have full representation on our Board of Directors - Raising awareness and understanding of deafblindness - Supporting people with deafblindness to remain in their own homes and participate in their local communities - Providing high quality peer support, volunteer companions, information and advice services to help people living with deafblindness live independently, interact with others, understand what rights they have, and access the services and benefits they are entitled to. Our services have been designed to: - improve our members' confidence and independence - reduce their feelings of isolation - enable them to have better access to information - improve their physical and emotional health The services we provide include: - Outreach (our local community outreach service supports people on-the-ground, helping with everyday problems) - An information and advice line which is made accessible to as many people as possible with textphones, Typetalk, texting and email - We make wellbeing calls to our members to let them know that we are here for them and to give them the opportunity to tell us if we can support them further - Peer Support & Social Groups (supporting our members to engage with their local communities, giving them the opportunity to leave the house and meet with others) - Volunteer companions who give members meaningful and engaging human interaction that dual sensory loss can make difficult - Digital Inclusion (supporting people to make the most of their digital technology by showing them how to use in-built accessibility features as well as third-party software and apps). Enabling our members to keep in touch with others, and to use the internet for shopping, banking and accessing information - Accessible holidays in our specially adapted caravans in Norfolk and Wales - A Casework service where we provide bespoke and individual one-to-one support, empowering more people to resolve their own issues, making sure their voices are heard and that they are able to make informed decisions - A quarterly magazine, 'Open Hand' that includes relevant and useful information and is available in a range of accessible formats
