Recipient Org: Description We work with socially isolated and often multiply-disadvantaged young people aged 14-19 from across Essex, to engage them in meaningful training and education with the aim of improving their prospects and life chances. We provide practical training in construction skills backed up by tuition in literacy, numeracy, health and safety and employability skills as well as providing mentoring and support to help these young people navigate their way to a better future. Many of these young people did not have a good experience of the education system and are reluctant to re-engage. Typical disadvantage and barriers to social mobility and employment are: being NEET, in care/leaving care, living independently at a very young age, homeless and 'sofa-surfing', no or few qualifications or unlikely to gain any, excluded from school or on a restricted timetable, unable to gain or maintain a place at college, special educational needs, known to the Youth Offending Service, as well as mental health issues. Increasingly, our young people suffer multiple disadvantages. We work with these often very hard to reach young people to support them and help them re-engage with education and training and to get ready for further formal training, college, apprenticeship or work – the next step in their lives.
