Recipient Org: Description Our current organisational objectives are: • We will reach more people and their families living with a terminal illness. • We will improve the way terminally ill people are cared for across the UK. • We will manage our charity as effectively and efficiently as possible. Our strategy can be found at mariecurie.org.uk/globalassets/media/documents/who-we-are/strategicplanbooklet2014-19_full.pdf or a hard copy can be provided on request. For 70 years, Marie Curie has been delivering expert care, guidance and support to people living with terminal illness and their families, ensuring that they can make the most of their time together and die well, in a place of their choosing. At Marie Curie, we are working for a better life for people and their families living with a terminal illness. Your support is vital in the context of the challenges we currently face – one in four people living with a terminal illness do not receive the care they need, and people are living with more complex and demanding conditions. Each year, through our nine hospices, community-based nurses, grassroots volunteers, and information programmes, our charity provides best-practice palliative care and support to more than 50,000 terminally ill people and their families and carers. In 2015, 46% of people who died in Essex were in hospital, and only 23% died at home. We know that most people would like to die in their comfort of their home, rather than in a hospital bed. Our nursing service not only makes it possible for people to be in the comfort of their own home, it also helps us reduce unnecessary stays in hospital for people with a terminal illness, and, with help from discharge support services, get people home as quickly as possible if that’s where they’d prefer to be. Alongside our traditional overnight service, we offer shorter daytime or evening visits, typically up to 2 hours, any day of the week, which are planned in advance. We also offer a Rapid Response service which is more flexible, offering short notice and out of hours visits in response to urgent needs and crises.
