Recipient Org: Description The Thames Sailing Barge Trust aims to preserve the historic sailing barges Centaur and Pudge. The Trust does this by providing sailing opportunities to the public and by introducing the barges to the general public through Open Days and events and by working with primary schools. The Trust is also engaged in teaching people how to become mates and eventually skippers so as to provide future crews to sail these iconic vessels. This scheme has been funded by Trinity House and National Lottery. This year we took on 10 new trainees and have 20 currently in training. Our Open Days are attended by over 1000 people each year and we also hold Children's Days at least twice a year and these attract over 300 children. Our school activities are currently allowing us to interact with around 150 primary school children but this will be increasing over the next few years as we expand this programme. The Trust sails its barges between May and October each year and can accommodate 12 passengers who cruise during weekends or charter for longer periods. Our capacity each trip is limited to 12 passengers by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency. We try and sail around the Essex and Suffolk coast. Passengers sleep on board in cabins.
