Recipient Org: Description Action for Family Carers was established in 1990 to promote the relief of persons who are ill, disabled, incapacitated or elderly and to make a positive difference to the lives of unpaid family Carers, including Young Carers, in Essex. Our Board of Trustees, many of whom are Carers themselves, oversee our charity’s aims which are: 1) To have a positive impact on outcomes for Carers 2) To raise public awareness about Carers 3) To improve public awareness of the organisation 4) To ensure the sustainability of the organisation for the benefit of Carers We hold NCVO’s PQASSO Quality Mark at Level 3; only the fourth organisation in the UK and the first in Essex to achieve this. The assessors noted in particular the dedication of the staff and volunteers and stated that “Governance is truly excellent – it is a real strength of the organisation in all its aspects”. The needs and views of Carers in Essex are central to all we do. We consult with Carers regularly to ensure we provide the support they need, when needed. We facilitate regular Carer Reference groups and Carer Forums. Carers save the economy millions of pounds each year through unpaid care. We support them to continue to care appropriately. There are an estimated 180,000 adult Carers in Essex. We support adult Carers with advice and guidance and through our ‘Feeling Good, Caring Well’ wellbeing programme; volunteer-led counselling and befriending; training and support to return to work. We give Carers respite with the provision of day services for older people and activity groups for people with dementia or memory problems. We support Young Carers under 18 with Young Carer clubs and a programme of support in schools. Young Carers may help care for a family member with a long-term illness, physical or sensory impairment, mental health problems or a drug/alcohol addiction. BBC research estimates that 1/5 secondary pupils is a Young Carer. Clubs give Young Carers an opportunity to enjoy being a child in a safe environment with other Young Carers who understand the issues they face. In schools, we help to address the inequality faced by Young Carers where they achieve nine GCSE grades lower than their non-caring peers. We will advocate for a Young Carer with their teacher, perhaps explaining why they have trouble completing homework or getting to school on time, and help them to work out strategies so they can achieve the best possible outcomes. We give transition support to Young Adult Carers as they balance caring with making important life choices including education and employment. We are a Network Partner of Carers Trust and promote our services through their network. We also have agreed ways of working with other voluntary sector organisation such as Age UK and Community Agents. We work with children’s services within the county council and receive referrals from them. We promote our activities and services via our webpage, Facebook, Twitter, local media, presence at community events, CVS offices and via schools and youth groups
