Recipient Org: Description | Westleton Village Hall was originally the village school until it closed in 1967. In 1970 it was set up as a registered charity run by Trustees for the benefit of the local residents and the neighbouring communities. It provides a centre for a number of local activities, clubs and events as well as being used by Westleton Parish Council for their meetings, Westleton WI, Workers Education Association for their talks and clubs from neighbouring villages. As part of Parish Care, it also opens once a week for a coffee morning to allow the community to pop in and have a chat over a coffee, and also a Soup'n'Pud Club which provides affordable, healthy meals for anyone who wants to come along, but especially the older members of the village. Activities and clubs include the Art Group, two Quilting Clubs, Yoga, Carpet Bowls, Gardeners Club, Film Club, Table Tennis Club and an Astronomy Club. The hall is used on most days of the week and the local communities really appreciate having such a wonderful building right in the middle of a beautiful village. The impact the Village Hall has on everyone is tremendous, as the majority of people in the village use it regularly and they would be devastated if it closed. This is because the majority of the residents are over 65 years of age and being in an isolated, rural environment with no regular transport links makes it difficult for some people to meet friends and socialise. It also enriches many lives by organisations sited there providing a programme of speakers and stimulating experiences which engage and inspire the mind. The village hall is fundamental to the wellbeing of the residents and neighbouring villages of Westleton and as such the Trustees are determined to improve the hall infrastructure, improve the facilities available to people especially the kitchen area and to create a warm, vibrant community centre for all to enjoy for many years to come. |
