Recipient Org: Charity Number 1168384
Recipient Org: Description Objectives: The first key objective of the charity is the protection of children and young people from the effects of online grooming, exploitation and/or exposure to inappropriate conduct through the Internet, social network sites and other electronic communication. We work to empower children, young people and their carers to identify online dangers and to take preventative action. The second key objective is to raise the general public’s awareness of the issues surrounding the online exploitation of children for the public benefit - in particular the promotion and education in proper safeguarding and understanding of on-line safety for all. Services: We achieve this by sharing a real-life account of what happens when you are not aware of these dangers and/or do not follow rules to protect yourself. We share the story of Breck Bednar, a 14-year-old boy, who was groomed by an internet predator whom he believed to be a friend. The tragedy that unfolded, culminating with Breck’s murder at the hands of the predator in Essex, lends multiple salient learning points to share with young people. We share these teaching points in an interactive, age-appropriate manner and we receive consistently positive feedback on the impact that our approach is having. Demand for our services now exceeds the resources we have available. With funding to provide more speakers, we can seize every opportunity to protect young people. The personal tragedy of Breck Bednar and the resulting emergence of the Breck Foundation has spawned a range of activities, which were clearly needed, and meets a large gap in provision in the UK. With funding to provide more school speakers we can seize every opportunity to protect young people and develop the service throughout England. This project aims to target the harder to reach groups with our message. We aim to target minority ethnic groups, people with special needs and people in deprived communities using the experience we have in similar areas such as Tower Hamlets in the East End of London. This means taking our message about safe online gaming beyond schools into youth clubs, scout and other youth groups, safeguarding officers and community leaders.
