Recipient Org: Description First Stop Centre is a community drop in centre, based near the town centre in Braintree. Our mission is to work with people who are disadvantaged, in a non-judgemental way in order to improve their lives. We have been operating in Braintree since 1981 and over that time we have worked with other agencies and hundreds of clients. We see a wide range of clients including: Those who have a history of mental health Those who have learning disabilities Substance mis-users The homeless Single Parents Unemployed Ex-offenders Senior citizens We offer many interventions in order to make a difference, these are: Basic Skills education classes (English, Maths and Computer Classes) Life Skills training (anger management, self-esteem building, budgeting skills) Individual Time Limited Counselling Benefits advice Job seeking skills (C.V. construction and interview techniques) Advocacy Service (within the context of citizen advocacy) Canteen Befriending Many of the clients that access First Stop are people that have slipped through the net. Some are unable to read and write, many are not engaging with other statutory agencies. Because we are a small independent charity, we are able to work with these clients and in many cases provide the support in order that they can access the help they need. We provide the clients with a positive experience, which gives them the best chance of making changes in and to their lives and moving forward. Each week we see over 50 clients. The difference we made to these clients included: Many were able to engage in classes and work towards a formal qualification. Some clients were able to produce a C.V. and to link this to internet job sites, where appropriate Clients who attended our anger management classes have reported they have been able to start making more positive choices about their behaviour We helped clients towards social inclusion and become less socially isolated Provided a safe meeting place for other interventions from other agencies- as we are known to many of their clients and they feel safe meeting here We pride ourselves on being non-judgmental and working to enable the client, for some this is over a short period of time, for others this may take a lot longer, and the forming of a trusting relationship with us is a huge step for some. We are able to take steps at the client’s pace, and we often feel like parents gently pushing the clients to make positive choices and steps towards becoming a more active, healthy member of our community.
