Recipient Org: Description VIY combines DIY and volunteering by challenging young people aged 14-24 to help repair and refurbish youth and community buildings and facilities, whilst learning vocational trade skills on the job. Young people are mentored by professional tradespeople, also volunteers, and gain Entry Level City & Guilds trade skills accreditations at the same time as developing/improving broader/softer employability skills. The principal target beneficiaries are young people who are typically NEET (not in employment, education or training) or deemed at risk of becoming NEET. Since 2012, 2,400 young people have participated at 100+ VIY project sites nationwide, supported by 300+ volunteer skills mentors. Outcomes include 80% of all participants achieving an Entry Level City & Guilds skills accreditation and 30% of NEET participants aged 16+ progressing directly to an employment or further training outcome. 64% of participants also report increased confidence levels across seven key personal skills linked to employability. VIY is supported nationally by Wickes and City & Guilds. Wickes provides free tools and materials, recruits customers as mentors, and offers placements and jobs to VIY participants. Each VIY project is also linked to local youth work organisations, Jobcentre Plus, local authorities, schools and colleges, and alternative education providers.
