Recipient Org: Description | The Gatehouse exists to provide a quiet place of refuge and a meeting point between the homeless and the established community in Oxford, with simple food, nightly activities, newspapers, access to the internet and a welcome for anyone over 25 who has nowhere to go. At present around 30-90 homeless people or guests drop into the Gatehouse on any one evening. Each night, a team of about a dozen, led by a volunteer Co-ordinator and including two/three paid Project Workers, attends each session to serve food and to provide a listening ear. The role of one-to-one project worker was suggested in January 2017, offering signposting and support to guests. This is a service, which has operated in Oxford since 1988 and was one of the first recipients of the Queen’s Award for volunteering. The drop in café is open Monday to Friday 5pm to 7pm and Sundays 4pm to 6pm requiring 187 hours of volunteer time on average each week. We have an Art Group, a Literary Forum and a Computer Group. |
