Recipient Org: Description The community programme of Orchestra of St John’s provides interactive concerts in special schools, working with 100 children per school per day in Oxfordshire but also across the south of England, and some concerts for special needs adults. We do this in collaboration with the associated charity Music for Autism. A team of usually three musicians with John Lubbock as animateur give short concerts to each class, sometimes to the school as a whole For everyone but especially for the more severely handicapped children and adults the music can enhance their lives like nothing else. The best evidence of value are the testimonials from the carers. attached, which should give you an idea of the impression made by our work. Many staff ratios are one to one so only each carer can really see the benefits. There is also evidence of benefit to the children’s families. However, we are conscious that a more rigorous academic evaluation would be useful to funders, and so have commissioned an academic (partly funded by a Cabinet Office grant) to document our music for autism events and produce a guide to best practice, impact and evaluation. See attached note of work in progress ‘initial evaluation’.
