Recipient Org: Description Friends of Magaret Coates Unit (FOMCU) is a charity that raises funds to support children with autism who attend the Margaret Coates Centre. The charity also provides practical and emotional support for the families. The money raised pays for additional activities and resourses unable to be provided within the local authority budget. We are a small charity supporting the 21 children who are on the Autistic Spectrum, who attend the Margaret Coates Centre in Bath. It is a small centre of 3 Classes for children aged between 4-11 within the mainstream school of St Martins Garden Primary School. Life and learning can be a real challenge for our children and the unit aims to help them all enjoy life and reach their full potential. Aims of the Margaret Coates Centre In planning for each child’s individual needs we aim to: Provide a broad and balanced curriculum which targets the child’s specific needs; Raise each child's self-esteem; Ensure that each child has access to the National Curriculum; Encourage independent work skills; Encourage tolerance and a sense of belonging. Our charity was set up to raise funds to allow the children to have access to extracurricular activities during school hours such as horse riding, swimming, Judo, and sports and music specialists. These activities are not just fun for our children; they teach them essential life skills that they do not always learn as naturally as children without Autism. For example, Judo helps balance, coordination and gross motor skills. It also allows them to learn appropriate interaction with others. Art and music classes give the children a way to express themselves, especially important to the non verbal children. Most of our families pay a voluntary monthly contribution towards these activities. Every child gets to take part in every activitiy regrdless of whether a contribution is paid or not. We hold many events over the year to fund raise but as we are a small charity we struggle to raise the funds required for all the activities to continue. We need support from the wider community to ensure none of the activities have to be cancelled which would have a detrimental effect on the children’s education and emotional wellbeing.
