Recipient Org: Description Home-Start Bristol (HSB) is an independent family-support charity, managed by local trustees and responsible for its own funding, with a record of 30 years of service in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. It is supported by Home-Start UK’s research, advice and training, works within their framework of policies and carries out on-going self-evaluation in relation to the standards of their rigorous QA System. Our mission is to make a lasting and positive impact on the health and welfare of disadvantaged families with at least one child under five. We offer parents the help and friendship of trained, supervised volunteers and intervene early so that difficulties are less likely to escalate to crisis point. Families are referred for support by Health and Social Work professionals, Children’s Centres and specialist agencies, eg debt, drug, alcohol and domestic abuse services. The volunteers, who must be parents, are carefully matched with families and provide support in the home in weekly visits of 2-3 hours at a mutually convenient time. They are accepted and trusted because they understand the challenges of parenting and are non-judgemental. They offer practical and emotional help ‘tailor-made’ to meet the needs identified by parents, supporting them to find solutions to problems, reducing stress and building resilience. They spend time with children, reading, talking and involving them in quiet and creative play, preparing them for nursery and school. They help parents to access local facilities and services, increasing their confidence to engage with community activities and cultivating independence and integration. They also help parents to explore longer term goals such as returning to education, volunteering or work and act as a positive role model, supporting the development of parenting skills and increasing the school-readiness of the whole family. The volunteer selection and recruitment process is robust – references are taken up and enhanced criminal records checks carried out. Volunteers complete a 36-hour Initial Preparation Course accredited by CERTA. We run 3 Preparation Courses and a number of further training events during each year. Coordinators carry out regular 1-1 supervisions with volunteers. The level 2 Qualification which volunteers can achieve, the training they receive and the experience they gain all build their skills and confidence. Many progress to further training and employment, well prepared by their time with HSB. Coordinators visit parents to discuss their needs and agree the focus of support before matching them with a volunteer. They then make regular visits to review families’ needs, to discuss the focus of the continuing support and to assess, with parents, changes in their ability to cope. Volunteer visits continue until it is mutually agreed that support can end, when adults feel better able to cope with the challenges they face. An average period of support is 6-7 months.     We have focused on providing this core ‘Home-Start’ service because it works. Volunteers are the key to its success. We now supplement their work, however, by employing an Early Intervention Worker to respond rapidly to the needs of referred families who are in or at the point of crisis. She gives intensive short-term support until parents can cope alone, be accepted for HSB volunteer support or be referred on to specialist services.
