Food Hygiene Training (360G-ocf-a061600000jzKts)

£1,750

We would train ten volunteers in Food hygiene. Once trained, we can provide a range of healthy food for at least 100 older and lonely members of our community. We will develop our Wednesday Call-in Cafe to include nutritious breakfast food and wholesome snacks to accompany coffee. As part of our programme of social activities (Monday and Friday evenings) we will include a programme of social meals and conversation nights. We will set a restaurant environment for our Friends with volunteer hosts on each table. The hosts will encourage and support Friends to participate in the conversations. Alongside loneliness, 80% of Friends are living in poverty. This means that they are often unable to afford a healthy and nutritional meal. Furthermore, as they have no one to cook for, many of our friends have told us that they eat sandwiches and cheap (usually unhealthy) snack food. Observations by our staff and volunteers at Wednesday Call-in Cafe have shown that the coffee and cake our Friends are served is the first meal of the day for many. We want to create an opportunity where our Friends are able to have warm and nutritious food.

Recipient Org: Description Our aims and objectives are to help older people who are lonely and suffering from social and community isolation. We create a family environment and refer to our service users as “Friends”. On a weekly basis we provide a range of social and therapeutic activities for 120 older people (aged 50 -100+) whose financial, physical and mental well-being are affected by the impact of loneliness. The weekly events take place: • Monday 7.30p.m. – 8.45p.m. • Wednesday 10.30a.m. – 12.00noon. • Friday 7.30p.m. – 9.00p.m The distinctive nature of Archway’s social groups is the emphasis on high levels of support and encouragement, with every effort made to ensure an individual receives what they need to enable them to take the step of coming along to the social group on a consistent basis. For those who struggle to engage in activities we provide them with a buddy who provides a listening ear, models good social communication, facilitates interaction in a small supportive group and encourages participation at a level each individual is comfortable with. For those unable to access our evening social groups independently through physical or emotional challenges we provide a volunteer transport service. We provide a home visiting befriending service for 52 older people who are too frail or lack the confidence to access our weekly social and therapeutic activities. Below is a quote from one of our Befrienders’ “I am very grateful that she comes to see me. It does cheer me up. I look forward to visits and seeing someone different.” Where funding allows we also hold Special celebration events (Christmas, New Year, Bonfire Night). We also provide a wide range of volunteering opportunities for our Friends and members of the wider community.
