Recipient Org: Description MLMC raises the self-esteem and quality of life for people with learning disabilities by providing a voice along with volunteering, training, employment and social opportunities for its members. Our mission is “to make sure that there is independent support for people with learning disabilities in Oxfordshire to have their say, claim their rights and to take control of their own lives”. The charity is the only independent, user-led, self-advocacy organisation (all 15 trustees have learning disabilities) of its kind in Oxfordshire with a membership of 530. Activities include… Nightclub –a monthly event where 120 people with learning disabilities meet friends, combat loneliness/isolation, and enjoy a night out. Training enterprises – paid trainers with learning disabilities train professionals, inspect services, produce films and earn fees. Travel Buddy –adults with learning disabilities support their peers to travel independently. Champions – who speak up, campaign, act as consultants and build relationships with professionals in order to take part in and to shape society. StingRadio – a monthly radio show increasing confidence and skills for the beneficiaries (DJs) and raising the awareness and aspirations of the listeners. 11 Monthly Groups – 140 members meet friends, discuss their lives and gain new knowledge & skills.
