Replacement Trees (360G-ocf-a061600000lwFJH)

We have relatively modest ongoing costs, so have survived largely on our initial sponsorship. But we now have a fairly substantial repair and maintenance task for the coming year. This includes: we have lost five of our original plantings. Our overall planting was some seventy trees, so the attrition rate is not severe, but does need to be addressed. We need to replace the lost trees. We need to improve the fertility, drainage and weed control around each tree. This programme was suggested by a team from the RHS who were visiting the village. We need to improve the grass cutting and weed control and general environment of the overall site. For a single tree the cost would be minimal. But for seventy trees that small amount becomes quite a substantial figure.

Recipient Org: Description The aim of the Milton-under-Wychwood Community Orchard is to provide all of the villagers (and visitors) with a place of peace and tranquility. This will be an orchard where the fruits are freely available to any visitor who wishes to pick them. We hope it will also become a place for picnics and a nature playground for children. It also has the function of preserving old varieties of apples and other fruits. The trees have been seleted to represent old, local, fruit varieties that are no longer available commrcially. A good example is the Blenheim Orange, an apple bred in Blenheim Palace gardens by the heard gardener who has a commemorative plaque on a house in Woodstock. A village about eight miles from Milton under Wychwood.
