The role of experience dependent plasticity during the critical period of layer 4 to layer 2/3 in circuit function and connectivity 18 Dec 2012

During development the neuronal circuit formation begins at the periphery gradually moving toward more central processing structures, requiring both spontaneous and sensory evoked electrical activity 1'2. This project will investigate (1) what changes in functional network structure underlie maturation of receptive fields in layer 2/3, using fluorescent activity indicator two-photon imaging of barrels in the somatosensory cortex before, during, and after the critical period of layer 4 to layer 2/3 plasticity. Offline computational methods will be developed to generate functional connectivity maps, in order to identify changes in network structure in relation to graph theory. (2) How sens.ory-driven and intrinsic activity influence functional network maturation, will be investigated by whisker deprivation before, during and after the critical period followed by two-photon imaging and analysis of the network activity with and without sensory stimulation. (3) Subsequent online analysis will be developed in orderto characterise the role of neurons in network synchronisation and plasticity during this critical period using in vivo patch clamp. A network model will bedeveloped to further identify how underlying synaptic plasticity mechanisms drive network maturation.

Devil The Room: An Exploration of Sleep Paralysis. 10 Oct 2012

Experienced by around 40-50% of people at some point in their lives, for some people sleep paralysis is a regular occurrence. The sensation of waking to a state of consciousness but complete paralysis of the body can be frightening enough, but is often accompanied by terrifying hypnogogic hallucinations. Historically the experience has been attributed to paranormal phenomena and the legacy from this remains today, despite scientific discovery disproving these mistaken interpretations. This p roject (working title: Devil In The Room) is focused around the production and distribution of a short mixed-media film exploring sleep the phenomenon of sleep paralysis. The film will be the result of the collaboration between an artist-filmmaker, a collective of creative technologists and two scientists. The theme will be further explored through a public event and a permanent web resource. The film will be a poetic documentary, combining scientific and cultural information with a potent and c hanging atmosphere. Innovative set design and animation techniques will be mixed with traditional live action filmmaking to create an eerie, effective mood. In this way the film will move smoothly and subtly between different representations of reality - echoing the eerie realness of a sleep paralysis experience. Tropes from horror and paranormal genre films will also be introduced and critiqued, exploring the theory that sleep paralysis is responsible for many seemingly paranormal experiences.
