Heroes Return 06 Apr 2004

The 52nd Lowland Division Reconnaissance Regiment has been awarded a grant to 16 Second World War veterans, 5 widows, 2 spouses and 9 carers. The gant will pay towards the travel costs for a commemorative visit to Holland & Belgium in the month of April this year.

Accrington St John/St Augustine C of E Primary Sports and Playground Markin 19 Apr 2004

Funding will be used to provide sports and playground markings at this Accrington school, plus fencing, a decking 'stage', and a bench. The project will promote physical activity amongst the children and wider community, and increase standards across the curriculum. Activities will include mini-volleyball, football, netball, short-tennis, and other playground games. Users will consist of 207 from the school, 30 from other schools, and 30 wider community.

Blacon High School - New storage room 19 Apr 2004

This funding will allow the school to build an extension to the sports hall, providing additional storage space for PE equipment. The project will increase the quality of the learning environment and increase the availability of sports on offer to pupils and the community. 612 pupils from Blacon High School and 1000 pupils from partner primary schools will benefit from the improved PE space and over 800 community users will also have access to the improved facilities.

St. Wilfrid's Catholic High School 19 Apr 2004

Sefton Council will upgrade the changing facilities at St Wilfrid's Catholic High School to improve both the quantity and quality of sporting provision and to positively impact on the number of pupils attending extra-curricular activities. The project involves refurbishing two changing rooms currently designated as specific boys and girls changing rooms to be suitable for either male or female use. It will benefit the 1,000 pupils at the school, 300 students from local primaries and 200 staff and partners.

Meols Cop High School 19 Apr 2004

Sefton Council will upgrade the changing facilities at Meols Cop High School, Southport in order to provide an improved environment. This is part of a wider programme to encourage the take-up of after school activities. It will benefit 600 pupils from the school, 200 from other schools and 800 members of the wider community. The improvements will include a new wall, floor and ceiling to the girl's and boys changing rooms/shower areas and new individual shower cubicles in place of communal showers.

Lanehead Outdoor Centre - Centre Refurbishment 19 Apr 2004

The project will refurbish the Lanehead Outdoor Education Centre in Coniston. The Centre is owned by the four authorities in the former county of Cleveland and provides outdoor education courses and training for their schools. The project will improve the bedrooms, the washing and showering facilities, and the drying facilities for activity equipment. It will also improve disability access to the building, create accommodation for disabled users, as well as a new garage and indoor activity area.

Kingsdown High School - Floodlit MUGA 19 Apr 2004

This project will create a fenced, floodlit multi-use games area at Kingsdown High School, in Norley. This will tackle existing barriers to participation and lead to increased use of various school sports facilities. It will also support the development of focus sports such as school soccer, rugby, tennis and hockey, and increase the range of sports available. This will benefit 500 Kingsdown High School pupils, 300 primary school pupils and 200 wider community users.

Castleshaw Centre - Upgrade Residential Accomodation 19 Apr 2004

Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council will renovate and modify the Castleshaw Centre, the LEA's Outdoor and Environmental Education Service. The facilities will be improved to enable a range of day and residential courses that will be offered to all schools in the borough as well as community groups. The project aims to benefit 11,000 school pupils and 2,000 members of the local community, who will receive an improved provision for outdoor and adventure activities, including rock climbing.

Castleton Primary School - New Changing Rooms and Junior Pitch Development 19 Apr 2004

Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council will provide new changing facilities, together with drainage and pitch development, to create two junior football pitches at Castleton Primary School. The facility will support football, rugby league and rugby union, athletics, rounders and archery. This will provide enhanced opportunities for 300 pupils from the school, 200 pupils from other local primary schools and 3,000 community visits.

Planting and Seating 27 Apr 2004

This group, specifically catering for older people, aims to improve people's quality of life by providing social and recreational activities. It will now improve its outdoor garden area to add further planting and seating. By having the additional outdoor resources the older residents, many of whom are disabled and unable to partake in normally social activities, will gain pleasure from a change in their normal viewing/garden environment which will improve their quality of life.

Improved Equipment for Larger Screenings 27 Apr 2004

This film and video making society makes documentaries of local and historical interest and also produces dramas, comedies and videos for educational and instructional purposes. With additional equipment it will be ale to show its productions to larger groups of people. At present the group borrows equipment from members and can only use TV as a medium for viewing which restricts audiences.

The group provide the youth with a place to grow and develop, understand the benefits of respect, teamwork and friendship in a safe and caring environment. It will use the grant to take 12 young people on a weeks outward bound course at the Lakeside YMCA. It will promote teamwork, respect and communication, enabling individuals to build confidence, self esteem and own abilities. a 5 day YMCA course and lodging fro 12 youths and a 5 day YMCA course and lodging for 4 staff.

This school is re-developing the site, including work to the playground. Sporting Activities 27 Apr 2004

The school will promote sporting participation to all its pupils via after school sports provision. It will encourage volunteers to attend training courses to enable them to assist with the delivery of the sessions and initially bring in qualified coaches to teach the children rugby, tennis, athletics, basketball and football skills. The school will form links with local clubs through the coaches that will be carrying out the initial training.

This award will be used to work with special schools providing opportunities for young disabled people in particular a school with a deaf unit to take part in tennis.
