Recipient Org: Description Challengers is a charitable company committed to providing recreation and leisure opportunities for disabled children and young people aged 2-25 with any kind of physical, learning, sensory or emotional impairment. The charity was founded in 1979 as Guildford Adventurers Association, changing its name to Disability Challengers in 1996. The name reflects the charity's aims to challenge the influences in society which have a disabling effect on young people, and to challenge young people to explore the limits of their impairments. Challengers delivers a range of programmes from two specially equipped play, activity and learning centres - located in Guildford and Farnham. The charity also delivers projects in satellite schemes in areas across Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire. In 2013, Challengers provided 138,000 hours of play to 1,300 disabled children and young people. Challengers supports over 949 disabled children and young people directly from Surrey, who are often excluded from leisure activities by mainstream providers. Many of the young people supported have complex or multiple impairments and 1-1 or 2-1 support is provided. Sessions take place after school, at weekends and during the school holidays. In addition, short breaks are provided for the parents, carers and siblings of disabled children, who are often under a great amount a stress as a result of their caring responsibilities. The charity employs 34 full-time staff members, 428 part-time workers, and 88 volunteers. The charity is governed by 13 Trustees.
