Recipient Org: Description Woodlarks is a permanent campsite outside Farnham, dedicated to providing camping holidays to disabled people of all ages. Seven of the week-long camps are open to all. Most other weeks during the camping season from April to September, are booked by special needs schools and groups. Outdoors there is a heated swimming pool, a zip wire with special seat, a trampoline and other sports equipment, a bird hide and BBQ sites in the woods. Alongside the brick-built dining room is Bradbury Croft, built in 2009, which provides up-to-date welfare facilities including ceiling hoists, wet rooms, toilets, and two sleeping rooms with electronically adjustable beds. Explorers Camp is one of the seven camps open to the public, and provides a week of camping holidays each year for girls aged 10-19 with complex physical and learning disabilities, through one-to-one help from other volunteer girls of a similar age. During the camp, girls are enabled to do a number of activities, for example going out for a day of ice skating (in wheelchairs), or using disabled cycles. Those with disabilities are assisted throughout the week by peer group members. The camp is run by 12 older volunteer staff. Activities include swimming, archery, outdoor cooking as well as visiting activities such as Morris dancing. Run since August 1984, Explorers Camp relies totally on its team of approximately 38 volunteers. Explorer’s Camp has its own budget and bank account and is run as a separate entity from Woodlarks Campsite – a registered charity – whose grounds and campsite are used for the camps. Camp planning and management is done internally by Explorers unpaid staff, many of whom have a medical or teaching background. Explorers’ camp has a Management Committee of 9 people.
