Recipient Org: Description GASP Motor Project was launched in 2005 as an evening activity for young people in and around the locality of Gomshall, Albury, Shere and Peaslake. The concept was formulated by the local police officer, who recognised the need for a diversionary activity for young people, including those engaging in joyriding and torching stolen cars in the area. The Project has since become a registered charity and has expanded to deliver activities to a wider cohort of disaffected young people across Surrey. The stated objects of the charity are to "advance in life and help vulnerable, under-achieving young people up to the age of 25…by means of (a) an alternative learning facility, and (b) a recreational and leisure-time activity to assist them to acquire accredited learning outcomes and social skills that will enable them to achieve their full potential in life and participate in society as mature and responsible individuals." Daytime and evening sessions are run by qualified mechanics and the charity's programmes are designed to meet the needs of disadvantaged and under-achieving young people, including those who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), involved in the Youth Justice System (YJS), homeless and/or unemployed, as well as those with special educational needs. GASP now operates from a custom-built motor mechanics workshop based in Albury, and the charity also provides a mobile facility which mirrors the session provision at the workshop. The charity employs 1 full-time and 4 part-time members of staff, who are supported by the Board of Trustees and other volunteers.
