Recipient Org: Description 1st Guildford Boys' Brigade meets at St John the Evangelist Church, Stoke-next-Guildford. We meet each Thursday evening during school terms and provide a wide-range of exciting and programmed activities for boys ages 5 to 18. (Our sister organisation, Girls' Brigade, meets at the same venue on Tuesday evenings, and we undertake some joint activities). We currently have 35 boys across these ages, organised into three sections: Anchor Boys (school years 1-3), Junior Section (school years 4-6) and Company Section (school years 7-13), and often find once boys have joined they go the whole way through. Boys earn badges and awards through the activity programme, and are encouraged to take on junior leadership roles themselves as they progress, so that some of our activities are youth-led. 1st Guildford Boys’ Brigade (BB) is part of the national BB organisation, which is a church-based youth organisation open to all (including boys of faith, other faiths, or no faith). We aim to provide boys with a good foundation of values and a great programme of exciting activities that give enjoyment and build confidence, friendships and character. We encourage our young people to reflect on the activities they undertake, thinking about what went well and what didn’t, and what they learnt (particularly from the latter). We aim to undertake activities that are challenging and that the boys would not usually be able to do on their own (for example, this year we have partaken in sailing, kayaking, archery, camping and hiking. We also undertake cooking, craft, and the boys have helped manage and update our website. BB is very inclusive so we often have special needs children/young people, and creates a great sense of belonging. We also build good relationships with the boys’ families and thus reach out into the community and have a social impact on some of the more deprived parts of the Stoke-next-Guilford area.
