Recipient Org: Description Established in 1990, Us in a Bus is a charitable company based in Redhill, whose objective is to improve the condition of life of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). The charity's name stems from the organisation’s origins of providing a mobile service from a bus, however services are now provided to clients by visiting them in their own places of residence. The charity supports people who have complex needs, specialising in finding a way to connect with those who are very isolated because they are unable to communicate verbally or who communicate through signing. A team of practitioners spend time with clients, aiming to create a safe and respectful space for people to be heard, valued and understood. Through careful observation, they learn how clients express themselves, find ways of communicating together, try out various activities and interactions, and encourage clients to develop their sociability and communication abilities. This approach is known as Intensive Interaction. UIAB delivers weekly sessions to 200 people with profound learning disabilities and complex needs throughout Surrey, and is a leading provider of Intensive Interaction services within Surrey. UIAB also provides training and consultancy for those working with or caring for people with PMLD. The charity currently employs 4 full-time and 13 part-time staff, and is governed by 5 Trustees. The funding people use to pay for Intensive Interaction sessions may have come from benefits, family, or their own savings, but Us in a Bus does not receive direct funding from Central or local government.
