Recipient Org: Description Awards for Young Musicians (ATM) is a UK arts charity and company limited by guarantee. AYM was established in 1998 and works to enable musically talented young people from low income families to fulfil their potential. The charity aims to advance the public education and appreciation of the art and science of music with particular emphasis on the promotion of specialist music education amongst children and young persons under the age of eighteen years old. This is achieved through the establishment and maintenance of scholarships and other awards. Since 1998 AYM has supported over 3000 musically talented young people from lower income families to overcome the financial and social barriers they face in order to fulfil their potential. AYM works across four programme areas: 1) Identifying Talent: training teachers in how to spot young people’s musical potential 2) Furthering Talent: targeting and sustaining young people’s emerging talent through strategic support 3) Awards: funding young talent UK wide through annual grants and tailor made help for individual musicians, and 4) Innovation and Research: leading new thinking and action on talent development. AYM is managed by 10 Trustees and employs 2 full-time and 1 part time member of staff. In addition, 25 volunteers support the running of the charity. AYM is an office-free charity, keeping costs to a minimum.
