Recipient Org: Description Established in 1970 Life is a national charity that exists to provide supported housing and care to vulnerable, homeless and at risk pregnant young women, aged 16-25, who find themselves in a crisis situation and with little or no support network or family connection. Many are escaping abuse and have complex, multi-faceted issues to deal with, such as mental health problems, alcohol and/or drug abuse; have left care or a young offenders’ institute, or face some other kind of disadvantage. We provide young mothers with a home and enable them to gain the skills that are needed to live independently within a local community to prevent repeated homelessness and social exclusion. Life helps them to adapt successfully to family life and to equip and help them into independent living. Through our network of 24 Life Houses we provide practical help, counselling, emotional support and life skills training with support workers, BACP accredited counselling, both online and face to face. Life is supported by local volunteers in 74 formally constituted groups and works with partner organisations, voluntary and statutory, at both local and national levels. Last year we supported 187 young pregnant women at our houses and provided non-directive counselling and skilled listening to over 2,500 women. An Outreach Support Service reaches many women in crisis, whether with an unplanned pregnancy, post abortion or pregnancy loss, providing practical support and signposting. In addition, working under the Life Matters™ brand, Life works in partnership with schools and colleges, providing education services and resources aimed at enabling students to develop healthy relationships, inspiring behaviour which values one another and life in general. It also champions the plight of our beneficiaries to government and in the media.
