Recipient Org: Description The Sandcastle Trust (TST) is a small, national, registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation. TST’s vision is a future where a diagnosis of a rare genetic condition will not be a barrier to experiencing everything that life has to offer – most importantly enjoying time together as a family. The Trust’s mission is to support families living with a diagnosis of a rare genetic condition, to build lasting positive family memories and strengthen their family relationships. TST aims to increase public awareness of the needs and issues that families face when accessing social opportunities, and to signpost to sources of support. Core activities include the provision of short breaks, special day trips and annual attraction passes to families affected by a rare genetic condition. TST runs an annual Christmas campaign, Sandcastle Santa, and provides support to small disorder-specific charities and patient groups to arrange family meet ups and fun days together. In addition, TST offers advice to those who wish to organise their own family holiday experience but who are concerned about how to navigate the often unavoidable complications that exist when doing so when the family has been affected by a rare genetic condition. Advice covers accessibility issues, transport concerns, medical equipment availability, and care concerns etc. A family is eligible for TST’s support when an individual or individuals within the family have been diagnosed with a rare genetic condition. TST defines rare as a condition that affects less than 5 in 10,000 of the general population. The diagnosis must be clinically evidenced and at least one of the following must also apply in relation to the individual(s) condition: (i) it is degenerative; (ii) it is life threatening; (iii) it is life limiting; (iv) it causes severe, chronic disability or illness; (v) it results in complex health needs and/or learning disabilities that impact on their family’s choices, ability to access social opportunities, and enjoy family life; and/or (vi) it has had an enduring impact on family life. Families who have suffered bereavement as a result of a rare genetic condition are also eligible to apply. TST works with a wide range of referral partners, however, families can also self-refer. In the year to 5th April 2018, The Trust supported 174 families with either a short break or special day trip. During the year the Trust made grants and donations totalling £18,805 towards the provision of holidays and day trips. This is in comparison to £7,346 in the previous period. Whilst the charity is currently 100% volunteer run, TST is looking into outsourcing some of the growing administration work. TST is managed by 8 Trustees.
