Recipient Org: Description | The Friends group (known as FOND) was established in 1997 and raises money for the Dorking Nursery School and Children's Centre (DNSCC) in order to support the work that is done by the centre. The Friends group is run by parents much like a PTA and has charity status. FOND is run by a small committee of 5 people and raises money through cake sales, raffles and events. The charity has 3 Trustees. FOND aims to provide funds for activities and resources that are outside of the nursery school’s budget, and to help ensure that the most vulnerable children have access to activities and events. DNSCC works primarily with families who have children under 5 years, to improve outcomes for families in terms of health and education. The nursery school has a particular focus on vulnerable families and aims to narrow the gap in attainment for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Recently the children’s centre has begun to extend its offer to families with children under 11 years old. The nursery prioritises places for those with special needs and on low income. Stay and Play groups are offered for parents to attend with their pre-school children. The centre also runs workshops and training courses for parents to support them to meet their children's health and wellbeing needs and to prepare them for school, and offers home visits to families who are experiencing particular difficulties with such things as housing, debt and parenting. The centre works closely with other local charities such as Besom, Dorking Area Foodbank, Beatitude and East Surrey Domestic Abuse Services. The children's centre is open all year round and works as part of Surrey's Early Help partnership. During the school holidays the centre will be working alongside play schemes and the youth service to provide high quality activities for families in the Goodwyns area. |
