Programme Let's Create Jubilee Fund
Purpose of Organisation The objects are: To relieve persons who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress as a result of a natural or other disaster or emergency, to promote public safety and to protect the lives and property of residents of Brockham in particular but not exclusively by: 1. developing the capacity of residents with the aim to prevent and reduce the likelihood and consequences of local flooding, particularly from drainage ditches and surface water; 2. recruiting and training volunteers to enable Brockham Emergency Response Team to provide assistance and undertake preventive activities when the village of Brockham is threatened by severe weather, its consequences or other local emergency or disruption; 3. assisting the Brockham community in setting up and organising community information and awareness raising events using Brockham Emergency Response Team’s expertise, volunteers and equipment for the benefit of local residents; 4. developing technology or systems to enhance the capacity of rural communities to monitor and warn local residents of the risk of flooding from rivers, streams or significant drainage ditches; and 5. developing technology or systems to enhance the capacity of rural communities to deter, prevent and assist in the detection of rural crime that may result from natural or other disasters or emergencies. The Activities Provided During the Covid-19 pandemic BERT organised thirteen initiatives to initially support our local community but very quickly we were needed on a wider scale covering an area of approximately 20 miles square. As we are an established group of volunteers we were able to begin our support immediately. The main support we provided was 1. Collection and delivery of medication and groceries to vulnerable households. 2. Working with Mid-Surrey Community Fridges we ran a hub for Foodaid which delivered food to over 150 households, including two women's refuges (at the peak of the pandemic) three times a week. 3. Subsequently many volunteers have been used by the local health authority to support the vaccine roll-out. We supported not only the local practice, but we staffed four centres in our region. Our aim now is to reinvigorate and reunited groups and individuals. NEW as of 23.01.23 ** Reserves held by Community Support in the Countryside/Brockham Emergency Response Team (BERT) have gradually been built through donations from residents and fundraising activities since established in 2013. BERT evolved following the flooding that occurred in the village in December 2013, where 96 properties suffered flood ingress. It became clear that a local response was required to help protect the lives and properties of those, particularly the elderly and infirm residents in distress. Hence BERT was created and now has well over 100 volunteers who bring various skills to aid community resilience, primarily to provide assistance and information during severe weather or other local emergencies. To date, donations have enabled BERT to purchase equipment to support its resilience activities, a limited list includes 15 water pumps, generators, literally thousands of sandbags, ditch clearing equipment including strimmers and hedge cutters, hand tools. meters and meters of hose pipes and supplies of appropriate PPE for volunteers. Running costs are perpetually variable, whilst regular rural maintenance activities continue, additional activities are somewhat dependent on variations in extreme weather When the pandemic hit in March 2020, because of BERT's established network of volunteers it was well placed to speedily assist the community. Grateful residents and residents wanting to contribute, but unable to do so in person, donated to a COVID-19 specific appeal. Using these funds, BERT was able to purchase equipment to set up the community fridge, purchased PPE which was then donated to care homes and local health services, chill fridges for vaccine storage, chiller units for mobile health workers, foggers and the chemicals to support local business and the local nursery and school in continuing serving the community. As you will note from the Charity commission return, £12,000 grant money was ringfenced for COVID-19 expenditure, BERT has used the ringfenced grant money plus approximately an additional £10,000 on COVID-19 support. The donations to date do exceed current spending, however, they also allow BERT to be in a position to offer a level of post-pandemic support to those highlighted to us by partnership organisations, such as those suffering from long COVID, or to support the school in providing support for social and emotional recovery. Please note these donations from residents are for specific BERT activities and are not, therefore 'free reserves' for this project.
