Recipient Org: Charity Number 210031
Recipient Org: Description 12.10.22 Changed their name from I CAN to Speech and Language UK. I CAN exists solely to help children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in the UK. Up to 50% of children in areas of high deprivation start school without the language they need for learning and 1.4 million children experience long term, persistent SLCN. Our mission is to ensure that no child is left behind, or left out, because of a difficulty speaking or understanding. We deliver this mission through our specialist, holistic package of support: - by running the only national professionally-manned advice line for parents and practitioners worried about a child’s language development; - by providing expert independent educational assessments in two sites in England; - by developing and distributing evidence-based programmes for educational settings (i.e. nurseries, mainstream schools); - by running two specialist schools for children with the most severe and complex needs, both rated “Outstanding” by Ofsted (in Surrey and Nottinghamshire); and - by raising awareness of the issue, so it is better understood and addressed. We are working hard to achieve the goal set out in our current Three-Year Plan: to double the number of children we reach to 100,000 by March 2020.
