Recipient Org: Description Schoolreaders is a national charity which improves the literacy of disadvantaged children through a network of volunteers who listen to children read in primary schools on a one-to-one basis. Working with respected community organisations such as the WI and U3A, we engage communities, we recruit volunteers and we match them to primary schools in their local area. The school carries out the necessary security checks and links the volunteer to those pupils in most need of additional support. Children receive weekly visits from a community volunteer who provides one-to-one reading support in their school. Our volunteers listen to the children in order to improve their reading ability and help develop vital skills which help them access the curriculum and fulfil their potential. We are the only national literacy charity in England which provides reading volunteers at no cost to the school. This ensures that we can help all children, regardless of their background and their school’s financial circumstances. Areas of higher deprivation and lower educational attainment are prioritised, targeting the most disadvantaged children. The value of the scheme has been proven by the rate of our growth and the response from both volunteers and schools. Schoolreaders was founded in 2013 with 12 schools. Today, over 10,000 children benefit every week from a one-to-one reading session with one of Schoolreaders’ active volunteers in 543 schools. We believe that the extraordinary success of the scheme lies in the fact that everyone wins: the children, the schools, our volunteers and ultimately communities and society itself. Feedback from schools and volunteers in our latest monitoring emphasised the positive outcomes of Schoolreaders for both the children and our volunteers: • 90% of our partner schools rated the volunteer impact on the children as good or excellent. 91% noted the positive impact on reading enjoyment, 89% on reading confidence and 77% reading fluency. • 95% of schools rated the skills and competency of our volunteers as good or excellent. • 96% of Schoolreaders volunteers said they had a positive school experience and 99% would recommend Schoolreaders to someone considering volunteering. "Our Schoolreaders volunteer has had a huge impact on the attainment of our readers with 87% of Year 6 attaining the required standard in their SATs." Partner School, Colchester “A positive impact on the reading in our class, especially from children who do not have as much reading support at home. The children loved having their volunteer visit each week and were eager to read with her.” Partner School, Chelmsford “Our volunteer became a member of the class family last year. He built a strong relationship with the children and was a fabulous role model, especially for the children that don't have male role models at home.” Partner School, Clacton-on-Sea "Fabulous quality of volunteer - many of whom bring wonderful life experiences to the children too." Partner School, Saffron Walden
