Recipient Org: Description | We support families who have pre-school children with additional needs. We run 6 sessions a week which offer specialised play activities for children, aged 0-5 years, who have a wide range of disabilities and learning difficulties, whilst offering support to parents/carers. We have a very high staff-child ratio so that the children get a lot of individual attention and activities are adapted to suit each child's ability. Children who attend our group can enjoy play activities which are similar to any other pre-school: we provide activities that can be adapted to suit the child's individual needs as well as specialised equipment to aid development. We differ from a mainstream nursery or pre-school in that we run very small sessions (6-8 children) so that the children can feel safe and secure, therefore boosting their self-confidence and encouraging them to develop and learn new skills. We offer multi-faceted support to parents/carers; filling in forms, finding out about respite and sourcing equipment and signposting to other agencies are just a few of the things we help parents with: carers have a chance for a break, to meet others in a similar situation and friendships are often formed. Parents/carers are also able to enjoy some "me time": for example carers can take a couple of hours off e.g. to go shopping, go to the hairdresser, meet friends for a coffee etc while their child is safely cared for in our familiar setting. We are based in a small cottage with a warm homely atmosphere, so that everyone can feel relaxed in this non-threatening and nurturing environment. |
