Recipient Org: Description DIAL Lowestoft & Waveney is a charity run by disabled people for disabled people of all ages & their carers. We provide practical advice & support to help those with visible & invisible disabilities or long term health conditions to retain their independence & improve their mental wellbeing. The service is provided free of charge by our team of experienced advisers & volunteers who between them have a wealth of knowledge about appropriate benefits, specialist equipment & sources of grants to help with associated costs, transport & accessibility. We help clients to understand the changes to eligibility criteria & to complete complex on-line applications for benefits & grants. Over the last 30 years we’ve been providing an holistic information & advice service for disabled people in Lowestoft & across the rural market towns, villages & hamlets which characterise Waveney district in North East Suffolk. In that time we have established ourselves as a vital part of the community working with GP surgeries, Job Centre+, CAB offices, County & District local authorities & other charities eg MS Society & Trussell Trust who operate food banks. Whether it’s helping someone to complete a benefit application, advising them on local support groups, encouraging them to be volunteers, or even telling them about disabled friendly fishing spots, our work has one primary goal: to make life easier for local disabled people. In order to do this we offer a daily telephone helpline, offer face to face appointments either in the Lowestoft office, through outreach venues across Waveney or home visits if the person is too ill or disabled to visit us. For those who are capable of self-help there’s lots of useful information and links on our website & Facebook page. The demand for our service is huge and seems to increase year on year. In the 2015 Index of Multiple Deprivation, 11 of Waveney's 23 wards were in the top 25% of areas of deprivation nationally, mainly in the coastal wards of Lowestoft. At the 2011 census, 17% of residents aged 16-64 were in receipt of benefits & 13% self-assessed as having a disability which affected them a lot. In 2015/16 we dealt with 6990 enquiries from 1087 new clients & some old ones too, an average of around 28 enquiries per day. Most of our work is based around advice & representation concerning benefits, making sure that some of the most vulnerable people in our locality are granted the benefits that they need. We’ve made a huge difference to the lives of thousands of local disabled people. For instance last year we managed to secure £3,197,329 in additional benefits and grants for our clients. There is evidence to show that improving financial health has a knock on effect to mental health and wellbeing. In a recent survey 95% of clients said their anxiety had been reduced, 90% understood more about the benefits system & 78% felt more confident to speak out for themselves & their needs.
