Recipient Org: Description In the UK there are 850,000 people living with some form of dementia. With an ageing population, numbers are set to rise to 1 million by 2025 and 2 million by 2051. Whilst we wait and hope for a cure, much can be done right now to care for, and enable people living with dementia to live healthier, more active and enjoyable lives and bring emotional, social and physical benefits to families affected by dementia. This is the challenge ahead of us as a society and it is why Dementia Adventure exists. Dementia Adventure is a multi-award winning charity based in Essex. The problem identified was that once diagnosed, people with dementia were at risk of being indoors too much of the time resulting in an unnecessary decline in their physical, emotional and social well-being. We believe that, with the right support, people living with dementia can continue to do the things they have always enjoyed: get outdoors, remain active, keep connected to friends, family and their community and retain a sense of adventure in their lives. Dementia Adventure provides a range of services – all with nature in mind: - Fully supported dementia holidays and short breaks – Dementia Adventure specialises in designing and delivering, fully supported, small-group short breaks for people with dementia and their carers as an alternative to traditional ‘respite’. Our model enables the person with dementia and their partner, family member or friend to enjoy a holiday together with the support of trained volunteers. - Dementia Skills Sessions for people caring for, or supporting, somebody with dementia in an upaid capacity – providing strategies and tools to support family carers to look after somebody living with dementia. - Community Engagement – Extending our benefit by inspiring individuals and organisations to take action to shape and influence their local community through increased awareness of the physical, social and emotional benefits of outdoor activities and engagement with nature for people living with dementia. - Training – Often professionals are risk averse when it comes to enabling people with dementia to access the outdoors. Our team of qualified and experienced trainers deliver a range of training and bespoke support and help to organise outdoor activities such as dementia-friendly park walks. Evidence shows that the impact of our support activities for people with dementia and the people who care about them include: Improved well-being Reduced isolation and loneliness Improved health and healthier living Improved equality of opportunity Increased resilience More supported/supportive families For videos and more information about the work we do, please visit us at www.dementiaadventure.org.
