Recipient Org: Description | The Mersea Harbour Protection Trust has been formed because Mersea Harbour is under serious threat from erosion by storm wave action. Within 20-30 years it will become unviable for moorings, oyster cultivation and many commercial and leisure marine activities. There will be severe loss of habitat for vulnerable birds and animals including the rare Little Tern and European Flat Oyster. This process could be arrested by protecting these exposed sites from erosion by a recharge programme depositing up to 95,000 tonnes of suitable marine sands and stone on the seaward faces of the sheltering islands and promontories. A planned programme to dredge the approaches to Harwich Harbour presents a one-off opportunity to obtain such material. This should ensure the viability of the harbour for a further 70-100 years. The Trust has undertaken research and submitted detailed Environmental Assessments with its application to the Marine Management Organisation for a licence to carry out the planned recharge. This licence has now been granted.so that we can arrange with the Harwich Harbour Authority for the supply and placement of the material on site at expected price of £300, 000 to be funded by Environment Agency |
